Excavation Day 14: 03.07.10

Hello, my name is Jacob and this is my first time writing a blog. I’m from East Ayrshire and I’m an archaeology student studying in Aberdeen University who decided at the last minute to participate in this dig in Orkney. I’ve been working on a small structure that was made from the outer wall of the broch by “biting into it” and using it for parts. At first we hoped that it would be a burial site of some sort but all that I’ve managed to find in it has been a layer of soil ridiculously rich in shells, some small animal bones, some charcoal and a stone tool. There are many layers in the soil which could help to reveal its purpose, though what it is I’m not quite sure yet. The rest of the site has had a wide variety of interesting finds; today there was what appears to be a sword pommel found near the tunnel, and in the centre of the broch there has been some finds of whale bone. I can honestly say that this has been the best site that I have ever worked at; that’s partly because that this is the first site that I’ve been on. But honestly, it really has been great to work here and I’m glad that I decided to come.

About thecairns

I am studying for my MA(hons) at Glasgow Uni and am setting up this blog as part of my undergraduate dissertation. This part of my dissertation focuses on how the project reaches out to the local community and general public at large and so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
